Orange Cap Para-Pak C&S (Cary Blair Transport Media) - Stool (Refer to Stool Collection Patient Instruction link below)

 

Also acceptable:

Green Cap Para-Pak Enteric Plus (Cary Blair Transport Media) - Stool (Refer to Stool Collection Patient Instruction link below)

Red Cap Enteric Transport Medium (ETM) - Stool (Refer to Stool Collection Patient Instruction link below) 

 

Sterile Container - Stool (only stable 2 hours refrigerated)

Note: Stool that is not in transport media and is received greater than 2 hours after collection may be detrimental to the recovery of Shigella spp.

Rectal swabs should be placed in Cary Blair Media immediately.

Performed Test Frequency

Monday through Friday.  Positives are reported the same day as set up. Negatives are “ENHANCED” and set up again the next day.

Additional Information

Test includes: Stool Culture (Includes Salmonella/Shigella, Campylobacter, E. coli O157, Aeromonas, Vibrio and Plesiomonas) and Rapid Screening for Shiga-Like Toxin 1 And 2 Antigens.

Identification, typing, and/or sensitivity testing will be performed if indicated at an additional fee (per organism).


If stool is positive for E. coli O157, then H7 typing will be performed.


Follow-up cultures on previous positive patients should be ordered as a screen for a specific pathogen (MICR0002).
