Specimen Type/Requirements

Light Green top (Lithium Heparin w/gel) tube - Plasma (preferred)

Gold top (Serum w/gel) tube - Serum 

Red top (Serum w/out gel) tube - Serum 
 

Specimen should be centrifuged and separated within 2 hours of collection.

 

Test may be affected by gross hemolysis, gross icterus and gross lipemia.

Reflex Criteria:

  • If TSH is normal – no further testing.
  • If TSH is high – FT4 will be done - no further testing.
  • If TSH is low – FT4 will be done.
    • If FT4 is elevated -  no further testing.
    • If FT4 is normal or low - FT3 will be done.
