Specimen Type/Requirements
Inpatient testing performed in Bismarck:
Dark Green top (Lithium Heparin w/out gel) tube - Whole Blood
Must reach the lab within 20 minutes of collection.
Outpatient testing performed in Sioux Falls:
Gold top (Serum w/gel) tube - Serum
Red top (Serum w/out gel) tube - Serum
Fill tube completely during collection. Aliquot tube must be at least half full to prevent pCO2 loss and minimize exposure to air. Do not transport specimens in the presence of dry ice. Gold top (gel separator tube) is stable 5 days refrigerated if unopened.
Test is affected by gross hemolysis. Test is affected by lipemia.
