Specimen Type/Requirements
Fresh - submitted in sterile container.
Collection Instructions:
1. Gather supplies.
- Sterile container
- Sterile container with sterile saline (brushings only)
2. Collect specimen.
A. Brushings:
- Cut brush tip off into properly labeled sterile container with sterile saline added.
- If additional brushings are collected from the SAME site, repeat using the same container.
- Use separate container for brushings from separate sites.
B. Washings or Lavage:
- Add specimen to properly labeled container.
3. Label specimen container in presence of the patient at the time of collection.
- Two unique patient identifiers (name, MRN, DOB)
- Specimen source and method of collection
- Collection date and time
4. Transportation:
- Specimens must be submitted in an appropriately labeled container with a secure lid to prevent leakage during transport and placed in a biohazard transport bag.
- All specimens must be submitted with the appropriate Cytology Order requisition - place in the outer fold of the biohazard bag.

Specimens received after 3:00pm will be processed the following day.
