Specimen Type/Requirements

Fresh - submitted in sterile container.

 

Collection Instructions:

 

1. Gather supplies.

  • Sterile container
  • Sterile container with sterile saline (brushings only)

2. Collect specimen.

A. Brushings:

  • Cut brush tip off into properly labeled sterile container with sterile saline added.
  • If additional brushings are collected from the SAME site, repeat using the same container.
  • Use separate container for brushings from separate sites.

B. Washings or Lavage:

  • Add specimen to properly labeled container.

3. Label specimen container in presence of the patient at the time of collection.

  • Two unique patient identifiers (name, MRN, DOB)
  • Specimen source and method of collection
  • Collection date and time

4. Transportation:

  • Specimens must be submitted in an appropriately labeled container with a secure lid to prevent leakage during transport and placed in a biohazard transport bag.
  • All specimens must be submitted with the appropriate Cytology Order requisition - place in the outer fold of the biohazard bag.

Performed Test Frequency

Monday through Friday 8:00am-3:00pm

Specimens received after 3:00pm will be processed the following day.

Typically within 72 hours from receipt into the testing laboratory.
