Specimen Type/Requirements

Lavender top (EDTA) tube -  Plasma
Gold top (Serum w/ gel) tube - Serum

Red top (Serum w/out gel) tube - Serum

Sterile Container - Stool, CSF, Pericardial Fluid


UTM or M4 media - Swab from throat, rectal, lesion or nasopharyngeal source

Leave swab in UTM/M4 media.  Specimens collected that are placed in Universal Transport Media (UTM) must have the swab left in the media and will be sent frozen. 

 

 

Separate plasma/serum from cells within 2 hours of collection.

Indicate source on specimen and requisition.

Test is not affected by hemolysis or lipemia. 

Sanford Laboratories - Bismarck Note:

Bismarck:  UTM  Universal Viral Transport Medium for Viruses, Chlamydiae, Mycoplasmas and Ureaplasmas is kept in the Microbiology department.  Request the media as needed.
